Faith-Based Rehab

When struggling with addiction, it is common to turn to those things we find safe and supportive. For some, that may be family, friends, or significant others. For others, it may be faith and the community involvement within their faith. Someone who follows any religion may experience additional obstacles unique to their recovery. People of faith often struggle with how their addiction to drugs or alcohol and their ability to stop using without addiction treatment affects their spirituality and beliefs. Addiction does not discriminate. It can affect anyone regardless of their spirituality, religious beliefs, religious upbringing, or lack thereof.

Faith-Based Recovery

Contrary to historical beliefs, becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol is not a moral failing. Addiction is a disease that impacts how the body functions and brain function. It is a disease similar to diabetes or heart disease that can be defeated with the help of professional addiction treatment. No matter how robust one’s faith or spiritual beliefs, addiction can take control.

Faith-based rehabs can help those with strong religious connections or beliefs connect with their higher power to overcome drug and alcohol abuse. Faith-based rehabs are specialized rehabs that allow recovering addicts with the freedom to continue to explore and grow their religious beliefs during treatment.

Faith-Based Addiction Treatment

What is a Faith-Based Drug Rehab?

Faith-based rehabs include the concepts of forgiveness, faith, grace, and reconciliation in their therapy models. When clients disclose unhealthy, self-destructive, or negative thoughts, therapists in a faith-based setting may encourage them to turn to or lean on their higher power or spiritual beliefs for assistance and guidance. Communications with their higher power, may include prayer, intuition, or other internal communication pathways depending on one’s belief structure. Faith-based recovery programs also incorporates faith into traditional addiction treatment strategies. For example, a common form of therapy in recovery is cognitive-behavioral therapy. In the faith-based setting, religiously integrated cognitive behavioral therapy (RCBT) incorporates traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy methods with spiritual practices.

Although religiously integrated cognitive behavioral therapy follows the same principles of traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy, it also inspires the participant to apply their religious traditions and practices as a significant coping skill for replacing unhealthy thoughts and behaviors that often lead to and encourage addictive habits and practices. Turning to faith may also help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety that often accompany addiction.

Some faith based rehabilitation programs and therapy programs also encourage the use of scripture-specific contemplation as a form of therapy. During these therapy sessions, biblical verses are utilized to help patients relate biblical scripture to negative thought patterns related to addiction.

Faith-based treatment centers ‘near me’ provide similar therapy programs to those found in secular programs. Participants in a faith-based program can expect to receive detox services, individual therapy, group therapy, medication supervision, and 24-hour medical, emotional, and nutritional support. In a faith-based program, certified spiritual advisors are present to provide faith-centered counseling and guidance throughout the rehab process.

What is the Difference Between a Faith-Based Rehab and a Secular Rehab?

Faith-based addiction programs have been around for many years. One of the most common and most well-known is the 12-step program utilized by Alcoholics Anonymous and many others. For those who have or follow a specific faith, it can be highly beneficial to their recovery to integrate their beliefs as part of their addiction treatment plan. For some, religion can provide the support and guidance they need to reach out to for power and encouragement during the most challenging parts of treatment.

Despite its benefits to those who find support within their religious community, faith-based rehab is not for everyone. There can be several reasons for this, none of which reduce the effectiveness of secular or faith-based addiction treatment interventions. There are many who seek addiction treatment; however, they do not subscribe to the teachings or beliefs of a particular faith. In these cases, receiving treatment that focuses on the tenants of a specific faith will not be as successful. It may encourage them not to follow the guidance provided during treatment. In these cases, secular treatment options are likely to result in more significant sobriety and recovery opportunities.

There are several therapies that have been proven successful in treating addiction but are not connected to a specific faith. Similar to religiously integrated cognitive behavioral therapy, traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy encourages participants to examine negative thoughts and behaviors and teaches them ways to change them. However, conventional cognitive-behavioral therapy does not promote the same focus on religious connection.  In this case, participants focus on self-empowerment and self-reliance to defeat their addictions instead of an emphasis on seeking out a higher power to help combat addictive behaviors and emotions. Although traditional 12- step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous often focus on a religious connection, there are many secular versions of the traditional 12-step program that allow participants to engage in support groups without a spiritual focus.  Faith-based drug rehabs are open to everyone. Although one can indeed attend a faith-based rehab regardless of their religious beliefs or affiliations, it is typically ideal for someone seeking addiction treatment to choose a program that most closely aligns with their beliefs. Choosing a program with a strong religious focus when one does not follow or subscribe to that particular faith may inhibit recovery and may lead to discomfort in the treatment setting.
