Understanding Addiction

An Introduction

Addiction is not a choice for a voluntary habit. For decades this unfounded and dangerous misconception was the primary viewpoint on addiction. For many years, the medical community, mental health community, and society saw addiction as a moral failing by an individual who “chose” addiction over sobriety.

These unfortunate misconceptions have sent many struggling with addiction into hiding, choosing to isolate themselves to ensure family and friends were not aware of their addictive behaviors. Stigma related to such beliefs has also resulted in the failure to seek addiction treatment for many due to embarrassment or shame.

Learn More About Your Options at the Best Drug Treatment Centers

Addiction is an individual illness. Each person struggles with different addictions, and substances affect each person in unique ways. Therefore, cookie-cutter treatments will not work for everyone. Many of the best drug treatment centers in the U.S. use an evidence-based continuum of care approach to addiction treatment. This means each treatment center provides individualized treatment plans that are best designed to suit each patients’ specific needs. It also means patients enter care at the level of care needed to meet their treatment needs. As they progress through treatment and their care needs change, so does the level of care necessary.

The Different Types of Addiction Treatment

The first level of care (0.5) is Early Intervention Services. These are services that occur before treatment begins. They are designed for those who are at risk of developing a substance use disorder but do not have symptoms that are clinically significant enough to warrant admission to an addiction treatment center. Early intervention services are used to educate about the dangers of drug use and encourage behavioral changes necessary to avoid addiction.

Residential Treatment

The level of care provides residential substance abuse treatment. It is generally appropriate for those who have an unstable living environment at home or those who have been through treatment before and experienced a relapse. In a residential treatment setting, therapy and assistance are provided on a 24/7 basis, and the facility is staffed every day. This means whenever patients need support or help; someone is available to meet their needs. At a residential program, patients receive support across a large spectrum of care, including medical, nutritional, mental health, and medication management.

Intensive Outpatient & Partial Hospitalization

This level of treatment can provide more intensive services. If someone is in need of medical, mental health, medication management, or 24-hour crisis services, level two treatment is a suitable alternative to outpatient care. Intensive outpatient services provide counseling and education about addiction and co-existing mental health conditions. It is essential to note that intensive outpatient programs cannot treat unstable mental health conditions. Partial hospitalization programs provide similar treatment to intensive outpatient programs; however, they do not require someone to go outside the facility for mental health, medical and laboratory services.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient treatment differs from inpatient addiction treatment in that patients are not required to stay on-site at the treatment center during the course of treatment. This level of treatment allows patients to maintain employment and continue family obligations while receiving addiction treatment services. Outpatient treatment requires patients to attend scheduled therapy sessions and group meetings. Outpatient services are often best for those with strong support systems at home or for whom this is their first time in treatment. Outpatient care provides evaluation, treatment, and aftercare services similar to those in an inpatient treatment setting. This level of care can be a stepping stone to more intensive programs if they would be better suited to the patients’ care needs.
